Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY:

Store Counsel is an entry-level in-house attorney that advises various Menard, Inc. divisions on its legal rights, obligations, and privileges. The qualified candidate must perform the following responsibilities:

 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Litigation
  • Prosecute and defend legal cases, including debt collection, on the company’s behalf;
  • Evaluate cases to determine the cost of litigation, the benefits of alternative dispute resolution, and the benefits of settlement;
  • Represent the interests of Menard, Inc. in all phases of litigation, including but not limited to, discovery, taking and defending depositions, trial preparation, motion practice, and appeals.
  • Legal Advice
  • Prepare and present legal training to managers;
  • Advise management on legal developments and its impact on business;
  • Review proposed vendor contracts and advise company on legal implications.
  • Legal research
  • Ability to review and comprehend applicable statutes, regulations, and case law;
  • Become knowledgeable in various legal principles, including but not limited to, contract, tort, property, labor and employment, consumer, and commercial law;
  • Apply developing complex factual scenarios to existing law.
  • Travel, as needed, for litigation purposes and to provide training and counsel to store management;
  • Provide written feedback to the General Office regarding status of cases and stores.
  • Other miscellaneous duties that arise or are assigned by the Manager of the Legal department.

Skills & Requirements

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

· Law degree from an accredited law school

· Must be licensed to practice law in either Indiana or Missouri

· Relocation to Eau Claire, Wisconsin is required

· Strong written and verbal communication skills

· Ability to work independently and produce quality work

· Must be reliable, cooperative, and able to manage multiple projects and priorities
