Skillsoft is currently seeking a Director, Strategic Program Management Organization (PMO) based in our Boston, MA office.

Reporting to the Corporate PMO Vice President, the Strategic PMO Director will lead management of corporate Strategic Initiatives, creating an operational framework for data-driven decision-making, and implementing an end-to-end transformation for managing Initiatives involving every functional area of the company. This is an exceptional opportunity to build a Corporate PMO that will set the company’s strategic vision. 

The Director uses the specialized skills and abilities of a seasoned Project Management Professional (PMP), which include the following core competencies:

  • Project Management
  • Change Management
  • Quantitative data-driven management
  • Cross functional program management
  • Translating business strategies into the work of the enterprise

The Director will drive operations for all company Strategic Initiatives and manage the inter-dependencies among them.  The successful candidate will ensure appropriate project artifacts are developed and completed, preparing project updates for the Executive team that ensure timely and effective communication of progress against achieving Key Performance Indicators, including all financial and operational targets.

The Director will create, operationalize and manage a data-driven framework for planning, execution, quality management and capacity planning, implementing standard processes for project requests, evaluation, and funding to ensure that approved projects are aligned with overall company business goals and objectives.

Working closely with Initiative teams, the Director will identify, communicate and facilitate the mitigation of Issues and Risks to ensure Strategic Initiatives meet their committed objectives.  This will require detailed knowledge of project Goals, Objectives and progress, gained through effective working relationships, active participation in team discussions, and the ability to use good judgment in assessing and, if necessary, highlighting project risks.

The Director will coordinate activities and deliverables across the entire organization, including the direct participation of these independent business functions:

Position Responsibilities

Be accountable for the ultimate success of Strategic Initiative deliverables and commitments, working cross-functionally. Actively direct and manage cross-functional projects and programs, assess risks, manage contingencies, and deliver results. Since the role is primarily one of management and not direct execution, timely and effective escalation and continuous visibility via dashboards and metrics is a key responsibility.

Continuously transform Corporate PMO practices and other related processes to improve execution, quality and efficiency. Establish a culture of continuous improvement across all functions and functional teams. Establish best practices and participate in training teams to execute those practices. Collaborate to establish project metrics and targets and lead the achievement of those targets in every project. Design and execute standardized methodologies for establishing Strategic Initiatives and delivering committed outcomes.

Lead selected large, complex projects with multiple interdependencies, achieving financial and operational objectives with compressed timelines.

Create, monitor, and maintain operational performance metrics including program sizing, planned level of effort, actual level of effort, as well as Schedule, Scope, Quality, and Financial and Operational performance metrics for Strategic Initiatives. Prepare dashboards, data, and presentations for periodic executive communications based on disciplined analysis.

Work with other Skillsoft business functions to refine business processes used to plan, execute and assess Strategic Initiatives, incorporating best practices from throughout the company in order to hold both the Corporate PMO and project teams to the highest standards of excellence in project execution, assessment and results.

Actively communicate and collaborate status and risks of Strategic Initiative deliverables, including managing expectations, and presenting and interfacing with stakeholders and sponsors.  Effectively communicate and take direction from Skillsoft Executive Leadership

Deliver key company initiatives on schedule, on budget, and to specification

Desired Skills and Experience

10+ years’ experience performing the principal activities of a Program Management Office in a commercial organization whose primary revenue streams are derived from software product development and sales

5+ years’ proven experience leading, mentoring, and coaching teams of project professionals

Proven ability to create quantitative management frameworks and drive a data-driven culture in the organization

A proven ability to deliver Initiatives, Programs, and Projects systemically and repeatedly on schedule, within budget and possessing all expected quality attributes

Knowledgeable about Program Portfolio Management techniques and methods such as Risk Management, Change Management, Knowledge Management, Quality Management and Information Technology Governance principles

Demonstrable interpersonal skills and abilities that translate into the ability to effectively drive cross-functional teams of Skillsoft professionals engaged in implementation of the company’s top strategic priorities

Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) and the ability to communicate with all levels of the organization from the Executive Suite to individual contributors and across all company functions

Customer Focused – personally demonstrated that both external and internal customers are a high priority by identifying, and responding to their needs in a timely and efficient manner

Initiative – Recognizes opportunities and initiates actions to capitalize on them by looking for a new and productive ways to make an impact

Education and Certifications

A Bachelor’s degree in a related field of study

Project Management Professional Certification desirable

Masters of Business Administration preferred
