We're seeking a People Operations Manager to join our team at Union Square Events!

Since opening Union Square Cafe in 1985, Union Square Hospitality Group has grown into an innovative family of food and hospitality businesses including fine dining restaurants, museum cafes, casual dining eateries, an executive training business and Union Square Events.

Established in 2005, Union Square Events has emerged as a culinary and operations leader within the hospitality industry. Through collaborations with a diverse portfolio of best in class clients and business partners, Union Square Events produces one-of-a-kind catered events and unparalleled dining experiences within a variety of cultural, corporate and entertainment venues throughout New York City.

The People Operations Manager for Union Square Events will ensure compliance and accurate administration for all Union Square Events businesses while consistently understanding and applying HR and employment laws, company policies and best practices. This role will collaborate with Business leadership to manage and streamline the openings and closings of seasonal venues and new businesses. This manager will directly support employees by connecting them to resources that support and enhance their experience as an employee of Union Square Hospitality Group. 

Key Responsibilities

Act as the HR project manager for Union Square Events seasonal and new business openings and closings

  • Work directly with location management to plan and communicate opening and closing timelines
  • Manage staff onboarding and facilitate staff training during opening at locations throughout the east coast
  • Maintain an active presence at opening events as well as staff line ups and employee meetings throughout the season or opening

Ensure HR compliance and administration for Union Square Events businesses

  • Ensure staff have a consistent and compliant onboarding experience
  • Oversee employee lifecycle documentation for new rates, transfers and exiting employees
  • When applicable, coach managers through HR practices and conversations and act as a “witness” manager for any employee relations meetings
  • Responsible for HRIS management of employees
  • Partner with location managers to ensure timesheets are completed successfully and accurately, and are transferred to the accounting department within specified deadlines for payroll

Partner with Hiring Managers to strategically anticipate staffing needs & effectively recruit and hire team members who are Family Values Aligned

  • Obtain hiring criteria from management and have full understanding of all positions requirements
  • Maintain external posts by partnering with USHG Recruiting team
  • Participate in collective USHG offsite recruiting efforts
  • Screens candidates for hire for Family Values before advancement in interview process; conducts phone interviews with first round candidates and when applicable, participates in in-person interviews
  • Coordinates in-person interviews and trails with applicants and managers
  • Maintains accurate schedule of all upcoming trails and interviews for review by management regularly

Lead ongoing training and development processes at Union Square Events

  • Work with managers to identify gaps in training and execute training plans with USHG training team
  • Support managers and employees in attending all pertinent training classes
  • Support managers in administration of and preparation for performance management process

Skills and requirements: 

  •  At least one year of management experience in the related field of HR
  • Previous experience in hospitality/service focused industry preferred
  • Knowledge of  human resources best practices and NYC employment law
  • Ability to exercise discretion with confidential and personal information
  • Ability to problem solve and multi-task effectively with an outstanding attention to detail
  • Strong communication and planning skills
  • Experience in working on large projects with several stakeholders
  • Excellent Understanding of Excel, Word, Outlook etc.
  • Language: English fluency required; Spanish knowledge is a plus
