Position Description: Degenkolb is again offering a summer internship program for future engineers! The goal of this program is to give students an understanding of how a structural engineering practice operates to complement academic training and to create a recruitment pipeline. We are fortunate to hire many former interns full-time after they complete their studies. For summer 2026, our remaining internship positions are in our LA office; our other office locations have filled their internship positions.
Ideal Candidate: A high-achieving current Senior or Graduate student (undergraduate GPA 3.40 or above) with a passion for structural engineering. Interest in seismic analysis is strongly preferred. If you're graduating from your master's program in spring 2026 your are not eligible for our internship program and should apply for our Designer role.
Compensation: The pay rate for this position ranges between $34.50 - $36.50 per hour. This range is a good faith estimate pursuant to pay transparency laws. Actual pay rates will be based on various factors, including education level and candidate qualifications.

Scholarship Program: Interns hired into the program are eligible to apply for our competitive scholarships:
- One scholarship for Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo students
- One for students at other California State University (CSU) campuses
- One for University of California students, with preference given to members of AISES, NSBE, SHPE, or WISE
Each award is a $4,000 grant, payable after registration for the Fall 2026 quarter/semester.
Scholarship Application Requirements (due March 1, 2026): Submit a scholarship statement (two pages max) that addresses:
- Career goals in the structural engineering profession
- Graduate school education goals
- Academic and leadership accomplishments
- Challenges overcome in your academic journey (e.g., first-generation student experience)

Job Description: In structural engineering, academic coursework is just the foundation—hands-on experience makes the difference. As an intern, you will work on active project teams, gaining exposure to clients, design challenges, and firm culture.
Minimum Requirements:
- Must be a full-time Civil Engineering student currently in your Senior year who is planning to continue directly into a Structural Engineering graduate program, OR a current Graduate student in Structural Engineering.
- Demonstrated passion for structural and seismic analysis (or steel design in Michigan).
- Strong performance in upper division civil/structural engineering courses (Undergraduate GPA 3.40+).
- Active participation in extracurricular and/or leadership roles.
- Must be currently authorized to work in the United States for any employer.
