Job Description

Position Overview:

The Veterinary Patient Care/ICU Technician/Assistant will provide advanced clinical care to critically ill or injured patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) and other hospital areas. This role requires a highly motivated and skilled individual who thrives in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment. The ideal candidate will have experience in emergency and critical care, along with a strong understanding of patient care and monitoring. 

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Provide direct nursing care to ICU patients, including monitoring vital signs, administering medications, and performing medical treatments as prescribed. 

  • Assist veterinarians or emergency technicians in emergency procedures and advanced diagnostic and therapeutic techniques when needed. 

  • Perform routine patient assessments, including blood pressure, temperature, pulse, and respiratory rate monitoring. 

  • Monitor critically ill patients for changes in condition and report findings to veterinarians. 

  • Assist with diagnostic procedures, including blood draws, catheter placement, and radiographs. 

  • Maintain accurate patient records and ensure proper documentation of treatments, procedures, and medications administered. 

  • Work collaboratively with veterinary staff to develop and implement care plans for hospitalized patients. 

  • Ensure a clean environment in the ICU and other treatment areas. 

  • Communicate effectively with pet owners about their pet’s condition and treatment plan. 

Qualifications: 

  • Veterinary Technician License (LVT, RVT, or CVT) preferred but not required. 

  • Previous experience in an ICU, emergency, or specialty veterinary setting is highly desirable. 

  • Strong knowledge of veterinary medical terminology, procedures, and equipment. 

  • Ability to handle a wide range of critically ill patients, demonstrating a calm and compassionate demeanor under pressure. 

  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work as part of a team. 

  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize in a fast-paced environment. 

  • Basic proficiency in medical software systems and record-keeping. 

 

Physical Requirements: 

  • Ability to lift and carry animals and equipment up to 50 pounds. 

  • Ability to stand for long periods and perform physical tasks in a fast-paced environment. 

  • Comfort working with potentially ill and difficult-to-handle animals. 

  • Ability to bend, kneel, and crouch.
