Job Description

Progeny is seeking a System Safety Engineer in support of work taking place under contract for the US Navy. This position will be a part of a team analyzing torpedo weapon systems and equipment to identify hazards, categorize risks, and recommend mitigations to reduce the probability/severity of a mishap resulting in injury to personnel, equipment damage, and/or damage to the environment. A Secret level DoD security clearance is required for this role, but an interim clearance will be acceptable to start.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with government personnel, vendors and the user community to ensure the safety of Navy Torpedo Systems to include the MK54 and MK48 torpedoes.
  • Conduct system safety analysis of hardware and software on torpedo platforms
  • Prepare/review/update Technical Data Packages and Presentation Materials in support of Safety Review Board Reviews including the Weapon System Explosive Safety Review Board (WSESRB) and Software Systems Safety Technical Review Panel (SSSTRP).
  • Review System Requirements documentation to identify potential hazardous conditions and make recommendations to system design in collaboration with program staff.
  • Perform operational analysis to identify potential deficiencies in operating procedures, training documentation, maintenance procedures, storage and handling procedures, and/or ordnance handling procedures.
  • Make recommendations to resolve deficiencies and make recommendations to test plans to ensure safety requirements are met.
  • Inspect, review and serve as an independent witness during engineering development and qualification testing of hardware components, software configuration items and integrated systems.
  • Assess Engineering Change Proposals (ECPs) and other system change requests to identify/verify safety risks.
  • Perform tasks included in MIL-STD-882E.

Skills & Requirements

Desired Skills:

  • Systems Engineering experience with US Navy or US Marine Corps weapons systems
  • Familiarity with DoD standard practice for the identification of hazards and the assessment and mitigation of risk
  • Familiarity with MIL-STD-883, Joint Software Systems Safety Engineering Handbook (JSSSEH), and AOP-52
  • Familiarity with the following types of analyses:
    • System Requirements Hazard Analysis (SRHA)
    • Functional Hazard Analysis (FHA)
    • Subsystem Hazard Analysis (SSHA)
    • Fault Tree Analysis (FTA)
    • Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA)

·         Familiar with hazardous materials and their risk management

·         Strong written and oral communication skills

·         Ability to work as a team as well as independently

 

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering or a technical related field, or military experience (4 years or more) at E-7 or higher will be considered in lieu of a Bachelor’s degree.
  • 5+ years of experience with Risk Analysis, System Safety and combat system/engineering experience.

 

This position requires the applicant to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret Clearance.
