Physician Assistants are encouraged to consider an outstanding moonlighting opportunity with Liberty Healthcare at the Dorothea Dix Center in Bangor, Maine.

The Dorothea Dix Psychiatric Center is a 51-bed psychiatric hospital which provides inpatient care to people who are experiencing mental illness.

After-hours medical services are provided to hospital patients by Liberty Healthcare's dedicated and skilled team of Physician Assistants.  This involves on-grounds medical assessment and treatment weekday evenings/overnight as well as 24/7 coverage on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.

PAs work weekday afternoon/overnight shifts 16 hours in duration (from 4pm to 8am) as well as weekend shifts 24 hours in duration (from 8am to 8 am).

During hospital shifts, PAs are responsible for:

  • Remaining on-grounds at the hospital for the entire duration of the shift
  • Rounding on hospital units – seeing patients and consulting with nurses and unit staff
  • Primarily providing urgent care and very limited psychiatric care to patients
  • Admitting new patients to the hospital – including conducting medical histories and physicals as well as basic mental status examinations
  • As necessary, conferring with on-call Psychiatrist and referring to the local ER

Skills & Requirements

Qualified candidates will possess an active Maine Physician Assistant license. Experience in a primary care, urgent care or ER setting is preferable. Psychiatric / mental health experience is helpful but not required.
