We are looking for a full time OR/PACU nurse to work out of our River North IVF center. This position is non-exempt/hourly and works 8 hours shifts, Monday-Friday including a mandatory weekend rotation every other weekend. The start time will be anywhere between 6:00a-7:30a. 


The Registered Nurse-IVF is responsible for providing patient focus before, during and post-operative recovering from anesthesia. The Registered Nurse-IVF monitors patients during unconsciousness and during recovery assisting them in handling personal needs in the first few hours after surgery and overseeing medication administration. 


Patient Interaction:

• Directs all aspects of patient surgical care completing the nursing process in the operating room/Post Anesthesia Care Unit/Critical Care setting. 
• Manages the nursing care for patient throughout the preoperative, intra-operative, and postoperative phases.
• Performs an initial preoperative assessment, introduces self to the patient and family, verifies patient’s identity, and explains the subsequent phases of surgery.
• Perform phlebotomy and process/send out labs as needed.
• Prior to the procedure, verifies the surgical procedure and ensures the consents are signed and documented in the patient record.
• Provides comfort measures and psychological support to the patient and family members.
• Implements the safe transfer of the patient to/ from the operating room suite utilizing proper body alignment/mechanics and ensures the proper positioning of the patient utilizing operating room equipment as needed.
• Assesses patient’s level of consciousness and vital signs per PACU protocol.
• Demonstrates proficiency in caring for patients who have received various types of anesthesia including MAC sedation (Monitored Anesthesia Care) or conscious sedation. 
• Administers medications by anesthesia staff or physician and according to PACU policies, procedures, and protocols. Utilizes knowledge of anesthetic agents, narcotic analgesics, narcotic reversal drugs, and other drugs commonly used in the PACU.
• Appropriately documents all care in writing or using computerized ARTWorks program.
• Has ample knowledge of infertility, assisted reproductive procedures, and surgical procedures to provide support and clarification to the patient and partner during this stressful period.
• Evaluates patient for discharge from PACU using criteria set by anesthesia staff and the policies of the Ambulatory Surgery Center.
• Supports and promotes excellence in customer service. Acts as a role model by demonstrating excellent interpersonal skills. 
• Assures patients/guests receive prompt attention with a caring attitude at all times. 
• Coordinates and communicates patient needs with other departments/staff.

Clinical/Technical:

• Serves as circulating nurse in the operating room managing the operating room environment, traffic patterns, and the overall nursing care of the patient while implementing nursing actions to ensure a safe and comfortable environment.
• Prepares documentation of each procedure and patient care on the perioperative record.
• Positions the patient in the operating room utilizing operating room equipment (i.e. stirrups, wedge) as needed.
• Maintains the patient’s skin integrity by keeping clothing/ bedding clean and dry. 
• Utilizes proper placement of the electrosurgical unit grounding pad if necessary for the procedure.
• Performs the sponge, needle and instrument counts as per AORN standards and assures they are correct through the final counts at the conclusion of the case. Initiates corrective actions when counts are incorrect.
• Remains with the patient and assists the anesthesia provider as needed during induction of anesthesia.
• Maintains an aseptic-controlled environment in the surgical suite.
• Maintains operating room time schedule. Institutes time out when physician enters the room.
• Maintains the sterile field and demonstrates competencies regarding opening sterile items, draping practices, recognizing breaks in technique or sterility and takes corrective action to correct breaks in technique or within the field.
• Checks and maintains sterility of items to be used during the operative procedure by verifying the expiration dates, package integrity and verifying the sterile indicator color change prior to opening items into the sterile field.
• Operates, monitors and trouble shoots equipment within the operating room and PACU areas. Maintains availability and functioning of surgical lights, operating table, foot pedals, accessories, oxygen lines, suction systems and emergency intervention equipment.
• Initiates corrective action for any malfunctioning equipment while maintaining patient safety.
• Prepares labels for, log and delivers specimens to lab tech as needed.
• Anticipates the needs of the surgical team members and supply items as needed.
• Maintains phlebotomy skills. Monitors IV therapy.
• Assists in readying the operating room for subsequent procedures. Cleans and disinfects ultrasound probe as needed. Maintains ample supplies and properly functioning equipment at all times. 
• Ensures that emergency equipment and drugs are available at all times. Ensures crash cart checked on a daily basis.
• Maintains safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations and calling for assistance from other health care support personnel when appropriate.
• Protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control policies and protocols, medication administration and storage procedures, and controlled substance regulations.
• Appropriately documents perioperative care rendered and reports unusual occurrences.
• Willingly assists other members of the ASC team as needed.
