Job Description

Avania is hiring a Senior Medical Reviewer

Salary Range up to CAD $100,000 + Annual bonus + Benefits

About the Role

As a Senior Medical Reviewer at Avania, you'll lead safety activities for medical device clinical studies, turning protocols into practical safety plans and helping ensure that participant safety concerns are identified, questioned and escalated. This is a clinical operational leadership role, not simply adverse-event processing or data entry.

Based in Canada, you'll typically oversee 5 to 9 studies, depending on their complexity, across areas such as cardiovascular, orthopedics, dermatology and neurology. You'll coordinate the work with Medical Reviewer 1 or 2 colleagues supporting each project. Where a medical monitor is assigned, they provide medical oversight and have the final say on clinical safety decisions.

What You'll Do

  • Translate study protocols and statements of work into safety management plans and other study-specific strategy documents.
  • Coordinate safety activities across your studies, working with clinical operations and other functions to keep work moving and aligned with client needs and study budgets.
  • Review clinical information and adverse events, identify inconsistencies or missing information, ask follow-up questions and escalate safety concerns.
  • Facilitate clinical events committees where required, including identifying members and coordinating event adjudication.
  • Manage competing priorities across studies with different therapeutic areas, complexity and committee requirements.
  • As you become established in the role, help mentor junior medical reviewers.

Skills & Requirements

Candidates who offer a combination of the skills, knowledge and experience listed below are encouraged to apply. With our continued growth we are hiring talent to join us on our journey and grow with us.

What You'll Bring

  • At least 5 years of relevant experience in clinical practice, clinical research or related work, with strong project or operational management skills.
  • A clinical background that enables you to understand medical terminology, interpret protocols and assess whether study information makes clinical sense. Nursing and physician backgrounds are welcome, as are other relevant clinical pathways.
  • Experience coordinating projects or teams, working across functions and following through independently.
  • Strong organization and clear written and verbal communication, including the ability to explain your clinical reasoning and identify what information is needed next.

Clinical trial experience at a sponsor, contract research organization (CRO) or study site is an advantage, not a requirement. If you're a strong clinician with management experience, such as a nurse manager or clinical practice manager, we can train you in clinical trials and study safety leadership. You'll also receive training on the specifics of each study and support from experienced peers.

Why Join Avania

You'll work directly with clinicians and safety committees, advocating for study participants through the information you review and escalate. Our team is working to reduce silos while maintaining personal service to clients, so you'll collaborate beyond the safety function rather than work in isolation.

The work varies from day to day and can be hectic as the team builds capacity and colleagues complete their training. You'll join existing senior reviewers, with peer support as you learn the role and potential career paths toward principal-level work or line management.
