Do you have experience putting down complex ideas on paper?  Coordinating with Business Analysts to communicate software requirements to a development tea?  Communicating software functionality to end users?  Do you have experience or a talent to develop training materials and then deliver that training?  Octo Consulting Group is seeking a Technical Writer to join our growing team in Washington, DC in a vibrant and exciting environment!


Our Technical Writer partners with the delivery team to produce a wide variety of technical documents to meet the interim and final delivery needs of the project.  These may include but are not limited to research articles, reports, technical specifications, development artifacts, requirements documents, and/or manuals for documentation, training, or process support.  


Our ideal Technical Writer  will coordinate with a variety of stakeholders in the capture, development, and production of work products.  Our ideal writer should have a flair and passion for decomposing technical concepts and jargon into accessible explanation and language.


We are looking for a team member who is an excellent communicator, flexible, highly customer-oriented, and interested in stretching professionally both as a writer, trainer, and a consultant.  The team member will also be expected to develop training slides and train users in new features.


  • Write and/or edit technical documents, including business proposals, reports, user manuals, briefings and presentations, functional descriptions, system specifications, guidelines, special reports, and other project deliverables to meet contract requirements.
  • Develop outlines and drafts for review and approval by technical specialists and project management ensuring that final documents meet applicable contract requirements and regulations.
  • Research and gather technical and background information for inclusion in project documentation and deliverables.
  • Consult relevant information sources, including library resources, technical and financial documents, and client and project personnel, to obtain background information, and verify pertinent guidelines and regulations governing project deliverables.
  • Commensurate experience, education, and level of supervision and direction. At least 5 years of post-collegiate professional experience
Skills & Requirements
  • At least 5 years of post-collegiate professional experience
  • At least 5 years of experience in technical writing and/or training.  
  • Primary or secondary degree in Computer Science/Information Systems or related field
  • Experience working with technical teams to develop and deliver work products
  • Demonstrated ability to explain technical terms in plain language
  • Ability to research, outline, and develop reports on technical concepts
  • Writing samples may be requested
  • Familiarity with quantitative and qualitative data analysis and interpretation
  • Efficiency-minded and highly compatible with a fast-paced work environment
  • Content management of or deliverables repository
  • Consulting skills
  • Capturing of meeting action items, minutes, risks.  


  • Familiarity with Agile management concepts.
  • Familiarity with both the Microsoft Productivity suites and Content Management Systems such as WordPress.  

Physical Requirements:

  • Regularly required to sit for extended periods up to 80% of the time; frequently required to move about to access file cabinets and use office equipment such as PC, copier, fax, telephone, cell phone, etc.
  • Occasionally required to reach overhead, bend, and lift objects of up to 10 lbs.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include use of computer monitor screens up to 80% of time

Work Environment:

  • Individual’s primary workstation is located in an office area
  • The noise level in this environment is low to moderate
