The Work You'll Do:

As a Product Manager, Application Platform at Sovos, you will own the product strategy and discovery for our Application Platform, which serves as the foundation for our Compliance Network (CN) product suite. This is an individual contributor role on an empowered product team where you will work closely with platform engineering teams, internal product teams as your primary customers, and stakeholders to discover and deliver platform capabilities that enable product teams to solve customer problems efficiently and at scale.

In this role, you are not the boss of anyone but must influence through data and logic. You will act as the "voice of the internal platform customer" to engineering teams, while serving as the platform expert to product teams building on your services. Your understanding of platform patterns, Conway's Law, and modern platform engineering practices will enable you to lead product discovery for foundational capabilities that accelerate all CN products. You will also contribute to Sovos' overall platform strategy spanning our global portfolio of indirect tax products.

This role requires you to solve hard problems – how to create platform services that product teams love to use, that reduce time-to-market, that ensure compliance accuracy, and that scale efficiently – all while managing technical debt and maintaining system reliability.

More specifically, you will:

• Lead product discovery for the Application Platform, working directly with platform engineering teams to discover solutions that deliver measurable value and are usable, feasible, and viable
• Own the platform product vision and strategy, ensuring alignment with business objectives and Conway's Law principles
• Conduct continuous discovery with internal product teams to understand their needs, pain points, and platform adoption barriers
• Contribute to the comprehensive assessment of Sovos' overall Platform stance, identifying consolidation opportunities and strategic improvements
• Define and evangelize platform standards, API contracts, and architectural patterns that enable autonomous team delivery and unified user experiences
• Partner with platform engineers as an equal member of the product team, not as their manager or project coordinator
• Build expertise in platform usage patterns, performance metrics, and technical constraints to make informed product decisions
• Drive platform consolidation initiatives, including the integration of Compliance Network platform components
• Create opportunity assessments for major platform investments, articulating value, risks, and business impact
• Collaborate with product leadership to ensure platform capabilities align with product portfolio needs
• Establish platform KPIs that measure both technical excellence and business value delivery
• Influence without authority, using data and logic to drive platform adoption and investment decisions
• Balance platform innovation with stability, managing technical debt while enabling new capabilities
• Serve as the platform expert for stakeholders, translating technical complexity into business value

What We Need From You

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent practical experience
• 5+ years working on technology-powered products as a product manager, with experience in platform or infrastructure products preferred
• Experience with product discovery techniques and modern product delivery methods
• Understanding of platform economics, including build vs. buy decisions, API design, and platform adoption patterns
• Ability to influence without authority, using data and logic to drive decisions across engineering and product organizations
• Strong technical acumen with the ability to engage with engineers on architectural decisions and tradeoffs
• Ability to learn multiple functional areas including engineering, architecture, finance, and operations
• Track record of solving problems with many constraints, using sound judgment to assess risks
• Strong written communication skills, particularly in creating well-structured, data-informed narratives and opportunity assessments
• Experience with microservices architecture, event-driven systems, and cloud-native platforms
• Familiarity with AI-powered tools and emerging technologies to enhance product development and decision-making
• Understanding of compliance or regulated industry requirements is a plus but not required
• Ability to travel moderately (25-40%) both domestically and internationally to Sovos locations and events
• Due to client contractual obligations, the successful candidate will be asked to clear a background check and drug test upon hire
