The Work You'll Do:
The Regulatory Counsel is primarily responsible to provide substantive research and analysis of transaction tax laws across the globe by proactively and continually monitoring legislative and regulatory developments. As part of the Regulatory Analysis team, you will provide the legal research behind the content in our tax calculation and compliance engines. This position is measured by delivering high quality, detailed tax analysis which is the cornerstone of our products and relied on by our customers.

More specifically, you will:
- Proactively and continually monitor legislative and regulatory developments in the field of transaction tax worldwide, with special emphasis on how such changes may impact Sovos’ systems
- Determine the impact of legislative and regulatory changes on Sovos’ systems and provide detailed, timely and accurate information regarding those changes to the Regulatory Content Team, in order to include those changes in the Sovos systems
- Support the Marketing group by providing tax-centric marketing material and webinar participation
- Research issues and determining the proper tax treatment with respect to monthly new content projects
- Apply multiple research related tools and techniques and able to clearly and accurately communicate legal analysis and findings using appropriate legal citations
- Explain complex tax rules in clear language for tax and non-tax professionals both internally and externally
- Develop and foster professional relationships with high level tax administrators across the globe
- Research and analyze client inquiries regarding the taxability of specific transactions under applicable state or national law and then provide a clear and detailed response, either written or verbally depending on the circumstances
- Perform other duties as assigned

- Support the Sales team by discussing tax issues and system abilities with prospects
- Independently produce coherent and complete research memoranda that demonstrate to a senior reviewer that an issue was understood, thoroughly researched, and accurately answered
- Support Product Management and Development teams in defining requirements and providing tax scenarios
- Play a supporting role in larger departmental initiatives
- Analyze and respond to client inquiries in a thoughtful, concise, and accurate manner
- Develop professional relationships with governmental tax authorities
- Successfully lead and manage new content research initiatives
- Act as an informal or formal mentor to junior colleagues
- Participate in the Regulatory Counsel boot camp by designing and/or delivering training programs (as needed)
- Prepare for and participate in client conference calls
- Independently account for complex legal issues in Sovos technology products
What We Need From You
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree and admission to the bar in at least one state (pending bar admissions are acceptable)
- Proficiency in legislative tracking and tax research techniques
- Thorough understanding of the complexities that exist in your assigned jurisdictions
- Detailed understanding of Sovos product and service offerings and how Tax interrelates with other departments
- Mastery of all of your jurisdictional responsibilities
- Excellent research, analysis and writing skills are an absolute must
- Ability to read, interpret and understand tax related postings and documents is critical
- Attention to detail is a must
- Additional language skills strongly preferred
- Minimal travel required to Sovos locations and events
