Job Description

REPORTS TO: Beverage Operations Manager

POSITION SUMMARY: The Bar Assistant is a vital support role within the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra’s (SLSO’s) Food and Beverage team.  This position assists bartenders before, during, and after events to ensure efficient, high-quality beverage service for patrons. Reporting to the Beverage Operations Manager, this role also works closely with the Director of Guest Experience and Guest Services Manager. The ideal candidate is reliable, organized, and thrives in a fast-paced environment while maintaining a commitment to excellent customer service and cleanliness.  Bar Assistants are committed to the SLSO mission, to enrich lives through the power of music, fostering a vibrant and connected community. 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Guest Services:

  • Represent the SLSO organization to a wide cross-section of the St. Louis community.
  • Attend scheduled SLSO food and beverage training programs.
  • Anticipate guest needs, intervening in a helpful manner as soon as possible.
  • Provide courteous directions to guests based on knowledge of Powell Hall’s layout, accessible routes, and named spaces, especially in newly reopened or unfamiliar spaces.

Food & Beverage Service:

Support Bartenders:

  • Restock bar supplies including liquor, mixers, garnishes, glassware, and ice.
  • Assist with prepping garnishes and organizing bar stations pre-event.
  • Monitor inventory levels throughout service and restock as needed.
  • Assist with wine or champagne pours for toasts and special events.

Maintain Cleanliness:

  • Clear and clean bar counters, stations, and service areas regularly.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the bar, bar tools, and surrounding area.
  • Ensure cleanliness standards are met in accordance with health and safety regulations.
  • Assist with cleaning in the donor lounge, bussing tables

Operational Assistance:

  • Set up and break down bar areas before and after events.
  • Remove trash and recycling, ensuring waste areas are tidy.
  • Help transport stock from storage areas to the bar.
  • Assist with support of donor lounge food service during busy periods.

Team Support:

  • Communicate effectively with bartenders and concession staff.
  • Respond quickly to bartender needs to keep service flow smooth.
  • Remain visible and available throughout shifts to assist with any emerging needs.
  • Report at scheduled time dressed in standard SLSO attire with a neat appearance.
  • Collaborate with other team members to ensure excellent overall service.
  • Follow all safety and sanitation policies.
  • Fulfill role in emergency response situations as outlined in SLSO emergency procedure.
Skills & Requirements

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Prior experience working in food and beverage, bar or concessions preferred but not required.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Friendly, approachable demeanor with strong communication skills.
  • Appreciation of live performance and enthusiasm for creating a positive experience for guests.
  • Ability to resolve conflicts calmly and professionally while enforcing SLSO policies.
  • Ability to multitask and remain calm under pressure.
  • Regular availability on Friday/Saturday nights and Sunday afternoons (occasional weekday night shifts may be available).
  • Daytime availability for weekday preparation, concerts, or events is a plus.
  • Able to utilize scheduling software and follow SLSO scheduling policies.
  • Participation in SLSO’s Guest Experience and emergency response training programs.
  • Ability to stand, walk, and navigate ramps/stairs for periods of at least two hours.
  • High level of dependability and access to reliable transportation.
  • Completed background check required.
  • Must be 21 years of age or older.
  • License(s)/Certification(s) required: Hepatitis A vaccination.
