Job Description
The role is primarily responsible for the coordination, communication and scheduling of all technical needs for theatrical productions produced in ISB theater venues. The person is also responsible for the artistic and structural design of all scenic and property elements under the vision of the responsible Artistic Director and/or Instructor. 
  • Designs, drafts, constructs, paints and installs all scenic and property elements along with the Theater Assistants
  • Supervises and trains Theater Assistants in the proper construction techniques of scenic and property elements
  • Works closely with the Theater Manager to ensure a structured, scheduled technical build can be achieved safely, on time and on budget
  • Coordinates and or directly calls show cues to ensure a smooth and consistent production is achieved.
  1. Manage all aspects of the scene shop to ensure a safe and efficient operation including but not limited to equipment maintenance, organization, purchase recommendations and proper operation to staff as needed.
  2. Design and draft all scenic and property elements for Performing Arts Department (PA) productions.
  3. Construct, paint, purchase, install and remove all scenic and property elements for PA productions.
  4. Supervise all Theater Assistants and occasionally students in the safe construction, painting, installation and removal of all scenic and property elements for PA productions.
  5. Coordinate with the Theater Manager on all scheduling needs for the complete technical build and process needs of PA productions.
  6. Work closely with Directors, Instructors, Lighting Designer and Sound Designer and students to create an effective production cue sheet for all departments to ensure consistent show runs.
  7. Directly call cue sheets during the technical rehearsals and performances when duties permit.
  8. Assist the Theater Manager in the communication and setup of any physical elements needed by Instructors in any of the ISB Performing Arts venues for rehearsals, classroom activities or performances.
  9. Assist the Theater Manager in overall supervision and maintenance of Theater equipment including lighting, sound, stage drapes and fly system.
  10. Assist the Theater Manager in the supervision and/or direct installation or removal of lighting or sound equipment within the ISB venues when primary duties permit.
  11. Assist the Theater Manager to maintain an organized and central inventory for tracking all Theater equipment including Lighting, Sound, Scenic & Property assets within Theater venues, classrooms and storage facilities.
  12. In Charge of Costume/ Prop management for both HS and MS productions, including scheduled cleaning, maintenance and inventory.
  13. Be available to work evenings and weekends as required to supervise and call shows, and address any issues that arise.


Skills & Requirements
  • College Degree in Theater Arts Scenic Design and/or a minimum of 2 years working as a theatrical Master Carpenter or Carpenter.
  • Strong background and understanding of Performing Arts in the area of scenic construction, fly line rigging and Stage Management process of cueing and calling a show, preferably in an educational setting.
  • Strong English and (preferably) Chinese language skills in order to communicate with faculty Directors, students and technical support staff.
  • A basic background and understanding of lighting and sound equipment.
  • Strong organizational skills to create, structure and supervise detailed schedules and processes.
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of artists, technicians, students and faculty in a calm and supportive manner.
  • Self-directed and motived to evaluate and address the needs of a production and theater facility.
  • Must be available with flexible working hours and schedule to meet the specific needs of a production.
