Job Description
 
JOB GOAL/PURPOSE:
 
To assist the librarians in fostering a community of learning and literacy that leads to high academic achievement, independent reading and learning, and collaboration throughout the school.
 
The LMC Teacher Assistant will provide:
  • Circulation of materials support 
  • Cataloging of materials support
  • Student support: individual or small group assistance and instruction
  • Student supervision: individual students, small or large groups 
 
The LMC Teacher Assistant is expected to provide student instructional support on a consistent basis and materials circulation guidance as directed by the supervising librarian.
 
DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
 
Under supervision, contributes to library and/or school-wide educational program, organization and management.
  1. Provides individual and/or small group instruction to students under the supervision or direction of a librarian.
  2. Contributes to and maintains assigned library records and files in a complete, up-to-date manner. 
  3. Assists in the planning, creating and distribution of library promotional activities, materials, and special events.
  4. Creates bibliographies, letters, purchase requests, and routine correspondence. 
  5. Assists library patrons in locating, circulating and using resources. 
  6. Answers questions from patrons about library programming, organization, management, and special events.
Assists with the organization/management of all library and curricular areas as directed by a librarian.
  1. Maintains instructional materials as required.
  2. Processes and catalogs acquisitions using MARC cataloguing standards.
  3. Corresponds with companies and assists with purchasing of items.
  4. Prepares, compiles and copies instructional materials.
  5. Receives, checks, and processes new materials and equipment.
  6. Maintains materials and equipment.
  7. Organizes, schedules and circulates materials and equipment.
  8. Shelves materials returned to the LMC.
  9. Maintains an attractive appearance in the LMC.
  10. Assists with inventory and weeding procedures. 
Contributes to management of patron/students' behavior within and outside the library. 
  1. Assist librarians in conducting instructional or developmental activities.
  2. Works with students to maintain an orderly atmosphere.
  3. Completes supervisory duties assigned to ensure safety and order of children.
  4. Enforces visiting guidelines for parents as directed by school administration 
Understands and exhibits good judgment in interpersonal and human relations with colleagues, students and community
  1. Develops rapport with students, parents, and staff
  2. Promotes and directs students in self-awareness, encouraging conscientious use of the shared library space
  3. Uses communication skills and conflict resolution strategies to promote positive relationships with students, staff members, and parents.
  4. Helps direct student aides, volunteers, substitute TA’s, and other LMC TA’s.
  5. Collaborates with other LMC TA’s, planning and initiating tasks together as well as providing support and training
Demonstrates understanding of rules and regulations covering confidential and sensitive issues.
  1. Handles sensitive and confidential documents, communications, incidents, etc., with due discretion and in a conscientious manner.
  2. Maintains confidentiality of students’ grades, attendance and behavior records, library records and files.
Observes International School of Beijing’s employment guidelines.
  1. Observes designated work hours.
  2. Understands and carries out directions from supervisors
  3. Complies with ISB’s guidelines regarding employee dress, conduct and behavior.
  4. Demonstrates safe, ethical and responsible behavior.
  5. As requested, or assigned, participates in formal or informal staff meetings. 
Participates in other duties as assigned by the Principal and/or librarian

 

Skills & Requirements
Must be proficient in the English language, both written and spoken
Experience and/or knowledge of a western educational setting
Demonstrated interest in working in libraries
Willingness and ability to work with young children
Adaptable/flexible and open to new ideas
Be able to follow direction and be a good listener
Demonstrated ability to work as a member of a team
Appropriate computer skills
Possess sufficient mobility to monitor students and control behavior of students in library and non-library situations.
Shows strong self-direction and initiative, as well as seeks clarification of tasks when required
Experience and/or knowledge of library science is desired
Ability to speak languages of ISB community is desired (Korean and Chinese especially)
