Welcome to our exciting team! This Staff Accountant reports to the GL Manager, Accounting, and is a key member of the general ledger team. This role is primarily responsible for managing sales and use tax compliance across the United States and Canada, including partnering with our third-party tax provider, supporting tax audits, and researching tax-related questions. In addition, this role supports the monthly close process by preparing journal entries, maintaining account reconciliations, and performing other general ledger and treasury activities.

The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, organized, and enjoys solving complex tax and accounting issues. This individual is a proactive team player who is eager to learn, collaborate across departments, and identify opportunities to improve processes and increase efficiency.

 

Core Requirements and Responsibilities:

Essential job functions include, but are not limited to:

·       Own the sales and use tax compliance process across the United States and Canada, ensuring timely and accurate filings

·       Partner with our third-party tax provider to review tax data, resolve questions, and support monthly, quarterly, and annual tax filings

·       Research sales and use tax issues, monitor tax notices, and coordinate responses with internal stakeholders and external advisors

·       Support sales and use tax audits by gathering documentation, responding to audit requests, and assisting with audit resolution

·       Identify opportunities to improve sales and use tax processes through automation, process improvements, and emerging technologies, including AI

·       Assist with the month-end close process by preparing journal entries, maintaining account reconciliations, and supporting variance analysis

·       Support treasury activities, including cash and bank account reconciliations and other cash-related accounting activities

·       Perform general ledger accounting activities for assigned balance sheet and income statement accounts

·       Assist with SOX compliance documentation and support adherence to accounting policies and internal controls

·       Coordinate with external auditors by fulfilling audit requests and responding to inquiries

·       Document, maintain, and continuously improve accounting processes and procedures

·       Participate in special projects and perform other duties as assigned by management

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

·       Experience with U.S. sales and use tax compliance required; Canadian indirect tax (GST/HST/PST/QST) experience is a plus

·       Working knowledge of GAAP and general ledger accounting principles

·       Ability to research and interpret tax regulations and apply them to business transactions

·       Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with excellent attention to detail

·       Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and remain well organized

·       Intermediate to advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including formulas and pivot tables

·       Strong communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across departments

·       Team-oriented mindset with a willingness to learn and continuously improve

·       Experience with Vertex or similar indirect tax software is a plus

·       NetSuite experience preferred but not required

Skills & Requirements

Qualifications:

·       Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field required

·       1-3 years of accounting experience, with sales and use tax experience required

·       Public accounting or corporate accounting experience is a plus

·       Occasional lifting and/or moving up to 10 pounds

·       Frequent repetitive hand and arm movements required to operate a computer

·       Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision (working on a computer, etc.)

·       Potential travel 1-2 weeks per year

Qualifications

The Professional Services (PS) and Customer Success (CX) bonus plans are a quarterly monetary bonus plan based upon individual and practice performance against specific business metrics.  Eligibility is determined by several factors including: start date, good standing in the company, and actives status at time of payout.

The Vertafore Incentive Plan (VIP) is an annual monetary bonus for eligible employees based on both individual and company performance.  Eligibility is determined by several factors including: start date, good standing in the company, and actives status at time of payout.

Commission plans are tailored to each sales role but common components include quota, MBO's and ABPMs.  Salespeople receive their formal compensation plan within 30 days of hire.
