Job Description

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITY:

The Kitchen Assistant assists with the preparation of food for the Fr. Alfred Center (FAC), a residential treatment program serving up to 80 Residents and 25 Staff for three meals a day. The Kitchen Assistant reports to the Fr. Alfred Center Executive Chef and works as part of the kitchen team getting direction from the lead Chef of the day. Responsible for the cleaning and upkeep of FAC meal service including, cooking equipment, trays, glasses, cutlery and tools. Set up and break down of the dining room and dish room. Some light prep work and other duties as assigned by the chefs.

MAJOR DUTIES:

  • Operate the industrial dishwasher.
  • Wash cooking equipment and other implements by hand when necessary.
  • Provide assistance to the chefs and other kitchen staff as needed.
  • Perform opening and closing side work.
  • Work as part of a team in a fast paced environment.
  • Ensure compliance of all sanitation and safe food handling procedures, as dictated by their current food safety certificate.
  • Facilitate and help ensure a safe environment (with respect to health and safety hazards) in all work areas. Observe safety procedures and precautions. Maintain awareness of and assists in the identification of workplace and job hazards.
  • Attend and participate in relevant meetings and trainings as directed by executive chef.
  • Adhere to the guidelines of the SAF Safety Program.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the chefs.
Skills & Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • No kitchen experience required, one year preferred.
  • Good listening and time management skills.
  • Ability to move cases and bulk bags of food; must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Experience working with and/or knowledge of issues affecting chemically-dependent adults preferred.
  • Must be able to perform calmly and well in fast paced and high pressure situations.
  • Ability to be an active and positive member of a team.
  • Has a current food safety certificate or is willing to obtain one within first two weeks of employment.
  • Strong interpersonal, listening, oral communication and conflict resolution skills.
  • Excellent work habits: punctual, reliable, cooperative, and team-oriented.
  • Ability to work non-traditional hours (weekend and holiday work required).
