Job Description

BACHELOR’S LEVEL INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

Who is Eligible?

Bachelor’s level students who are rising Seniors majoring in Social Work, Psychology, Family Studies or any other mental health related field.

Selection Process and Requirements

Interested students should fill out an application and submit their resume, cover letter, and a letter of recommendation from a Department Chair, professor or academic advisor from a current or previous academic institution.

The application, cover letter and resume, should be submitted through the Seacoast Mental Health Center (SMHC) website (www.smhc-nh.org). Applications will be accepted between March 1st and March 31st for fall placement.

Letters of Recommendation should be submitted directly to Karla LaRochelle, Internship Manager by the endorser to klarochelle@smhc-nh.org

Selected internship candidates will be contacted by the SMHC Internship Manager within two weeks after the closing of the application period to schedule an in-person (preferred) or virtual interview.

If selected after the interview, internship candidates will be subject to background checks to include but not limited to driving, criminal, BEAS, OIG, sex offender and DCYF checks. Once these are cleared, a start date will be determined. This is an unpaid internship.

Learning

The internship is in person for Fall and Spring semesters (late August through end of semester in May).. Students are expected to spend 16 hours per week divided into two full days (hours may be negotiated based on university’s requirements).

Students will be placed within the various teams in our Adult Services and Youth and Family Departments to take part in the daily activities of the team they are assigned to. The initial stage of the experience will mostly consist of shadowing staff in the community as they provide direct services to clients. As the students advance in confidence and knowledge, and sanctioned by their supervisor, they may be able to provide interventions with clients.. Students will also be required to attend educational meetings offered by the Center.

Supervision

Bachelor’s level interns will receive one hour of weekly supervision from their assigned supervisor. Preferably, if the student’s schedule allows, they will attend the corresponding weekly meeting for the team to which they are assigned.
