Job Description

The Building People, LLC, has a need for a full-time Metering and Relay Technician supporting the Protection and Communication Maintenance Division for the Western Area Power Administration, Desert Southwest Regional Office. The employee will provide technical support services and perform the following duties and tasks:

  • Performs work as required on power system substation equipment
  • Performs a variety of jobs concerned with the maintenance and repair of power system metering, control and protective relay equipment
  • Maintains, repairs and tests metering equipment, including watt hour meters, paper and magnetic tape digital demand recorders, switchboard recorders and indicating meters of all types
  • Maintains, repairs and tests control equipment including switchboard devices used in controlling substation circuit breakers, motors, capacitor banks and compressors
  • Maintains, repairs and tests protective equipment including current, voltage, differential, reclosing timing, auxiliary, ground detection and complex impedance relays of both the electromechanical and solid state types
  • Participates in the check-out and placing in service of new facilities and additions to existing facilities
Skills & Requirements

Required Experience & Skills

  • Twelve (12) plus years in the field working on protection, control and metering equipment. Understands safety requirements associated with working on high voltage equipment
  • Possesses proficiency in the use of instruction books, schematics and wiring diagrams, hand tools, electric test equipment such as voltmeters, ammeters, watt meters, phase shifters, auxiliary current and potential transformers, phase angle meters, phantom or dummy loads, millivolt potentiometers, loading transformers, ratio test sets, phase rotation testers, electronic counters, various types of bridges, rotating standards, oscillographs and oscilloscopes
  • Must be able to use test instruments necessary to maintain, align, calibrate and repair solid state meter and relay equipment
  • Contractor personnel while performing these tasks must be available by Contractor provided cellular telephone during normal duty hours
