Job Description

Title: Specialized Teaching Assistant (STA)
Reporting to: Enriched Inclusion Program Lead Teacher
Language skills: Fluent English

**The Specialized Teaching Assistant (STA) position is a local hire, teaching assistant role and does not include international benefits such as child education, housing, or home flight allowances."

Work Goals and Purpose:
WAB has an Enriched Inclusion (EI) program to serve the needs of students
with intensive educational needs including those who are twice exceptional. Under the direction and
support of the EI Teacher, the STA will assist with maximizing students’ potential as independent
learners and developing their self- management skills.

JOB DESCRIPTION
• Coordinates with EI Lead Teacher to support EI students
• Participates in training provided for Specialized Teaching Assistants
• Facilitates the inclusion of EI students through the principle of the Least Restrictive
Environment
• Facilitates the transitions for students though their individualized schedules including SPL, OT,
Counselling, individualized and small group lessons
• Provides One to One and/or small group instruction under the supervision of the EI Lead teacher
• Communicates effectively with EI Lead Teacher about the progress toward EI students’ learning
goals
• Facilitates differentiated instruction for EI students in mainstream classes
• Supports and delivers aspects of Individualized Education Plan (IEPs) for students as directed by
the EI Lead teacher
• Facilitates ongoing record of assessment of students’ skills to determine changing needs as
directed by the EI Lead teacher


PERSON SPECIFICATION

The successful applicant is expected to have the following skills, abilities, knowledge and experience:

1.Personal Skills and Abilities
• Flexibility and resourcefulness
• Ability to foster positive working relationships with teachers, parents, and students
• Good written and verbal communication skills in English
• Good human relations skills, including a positive “can do” attitude

• A commitment to working collaboratively in support services teams

2. Qualifications
• Post-secondary diploma

3. Knowledge
• A knowledge of teaching and educational working environment
• A basic understanding of accommodation and differentiation to help students’ access the
mainstream curriculum

4. Experience
• Relevant experience working in a school environment
• Some experience working with children with exceptional learning and/or behavioral needs is an
advantage

ADDENDUM:
Openness to working in a variety of settings. Willingness to learn and receive training in areas necessary
to support students’ development and inclusion. Ability to remain calm and effective in difficult/high
stress situations. Flexibility and openness to understanding behavioral patterns in children.
